Steffen Oeltze will give a presentation on Friday the 8th at 11h at FME (room 005) on medical images and visualization projects from the Hanover University Hospital.

Abstract: In the clinical routine of hospitals, vast amounts of image and non-image data are generated and stored in a multitude of hospital information systems. The majority of the data are used once for diagnosis and treatment of a specific patient and maybe, a second time for monitoring the patient. The data then, is archived and rests untouched until the legal retention period ends. This represents a huge neglected data treasure, which, if lifted, can contribute to the screening, early diagnosis and therapy of diseases. In contrast to new prospective studies, it can already convey the temporal course of diseases that develop over years or decades. On the other hand, the clinical data were not acquired having comparability across patients as a goal, which poses many challenges on data harmonization, cleansing, preprocessing, and analysis.

Annual meeting of the virvig research group members to celebrate the 2023 workshop.

The CLIPE consortium ( https://www.clipe-itn.eu/ ) organizes a training workshop on current trends in virtual humans targeting the CLIPE PhD students and other researchers. The training workshop is scheduled to take place in Barcelona, Spain, from the 27th until the 30th of September 2022. The workshop’s aim is to provide an overview of the latest developments and current trends in virtual humans. The workshop will be held at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya· Barcelona Tech (UPC), but it will be a hybrid event, giving the opportunity to participants to join the workshop online.

Keynote in CEIG 2022. (https://mon.uvic.cat/ceig2022/keynotes/) Virtual landscapes used in media and games nowadays can already display large impressive terrains with richness of details. Therefore, the current challenge is not only to produce visually appealing scenes, but also to ensure they conform to some objective criteria for realism. For example, we could simulate the physical processes underlying natural phenomena, or reproduce distributions of measured properties. Following these ideas, I will present a few works aimed at modeling a variety of natural landscapes: from deserts to glaciers, from the highest rocky peaks to gentle forested hills. We will see how, in many cases, we incorporated knowledge from other disciplines outside Computer Science, and how some of the key insights came from actual walks outdoors.

Taking advantage of virtual reality , the nursing students of Sant Joan de Déu University are visiting the Centre Of Virtual Reality to visualize various human anatomy structures to better understand what they are and how they are located within the human body.

The International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) has just inaugurated a new space for research at the UPC Campus Nord of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. A highlighted space of the new facilities is the potential of the new 3D room, designed by CIMNE researchers and the team of the Centre de Realitat Virtual de Barcelona (CRV) of the UPC. It is an important 3D visualization tool and it will serve as a testing laboratory by researchers and as a showroom exhibition of prototypes of engineering, bioengineering, interactive environments, etc The 3D room has a very high performance equipment, which features an array of 12 projectors to achieve more than 4K resolution, retractable large screen, calibration system, polarized glasses, 3D sound system, computer equipment for high-performance rendering and interaction works.
